Winter Social Tennis & Club Quiz Nights

Winter social tennis

TENNIS FANS - PLEASE TAKE NOTE!

It's very nearly time for winter social tennis...

All members, of whatever ability, are welcome to come along and you are encouraged to take part in the events.

The arrangements are as follows. As from Monday October 1st 2007, social tennis sessions will start, under floodlights, at 7pm on Mondays for men and at 7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for mixed players, whilst daylight sessions will also be available at 2pm on Sundays from October 7th onwards.

To further cement that spirit of sociability, why not also come along to the Quiz Nights which begin at 9pm on Thursday nights in the clubhouse ? The time is convenient for those who have been playing social tennis earlier in the evening, so once you've had your physical workout, you could have a mental one too ! Perhaps think of getting a team of your brainiest pals together ?

Quiz nights

Leigh's Got Talent

The club's tennis section is pleased to announce that it has organised an evening of entertainment to demonstrate our many talents and skills of the tennis courts.

"Leigh's Got Talent", taking place on Friday 21st September and starting at 8pm, will feature karaoke, singers and other speciality acts. Tickets are £3 per adult, and £1 for juniors - if you entered the tournament then you have already paid.

Presentation Nights

To celebrate tennis successes, all leagues organise presentation evenings. It's a great opportunity to let your hair down and meet fellow team members and opponents off the tennis courts. If you are interested in any of the events, please see the tennis section notice board for further details and for whom to contact as regards tickets. Please support any events that you may be interested in, as follows:

Thank you.

More opportunities to socialise

Just in case you may have missed it, Ray Vaughan has organised a 'Pre-Wimbledon tennis tournament' for Sunday 24th June 2007 starting at 1:30pm.

A £3 entry fee is hardly asking a lot and, to try to bring just a touch of the leafy south-west London suburbs to Pennington, strawberries and glasses of Pimms will also be on offer!

Don't forget, too, that Social Tennis continues - on Sunday afternoons from 2pm onwards, as well as on Friday nights starting at 6:30pm (no better way of waving goodbye to the stresses of the working week).

Contact Clare Gregson or Ray Vaughan for further information.

Tennis Open Day - Saturday 12th May

Tennis Open Day

Keep your diaries free for a Tennis Open Day which is planned for Saturday 12th May.

Everyone will be made most welcome - and, make no mistake, we really DO mean all ages and abilities!

Whether you are an existing member or not, feel free to come along and take part - the event is taking place between the hours of 2pm and 5pm.

You can try your hand at tennis if you want to give it a go for the very first time, or equally you can brush up on your technique if you've played before. Its also a fantastic opportunity to meet new people.

Irish Night 2007

Curry Night 2007

Curry Night 2007

A 'Curry Night' has been arranged as the initial fund-raising event for the club's 2007 season and coincides with the date of the first cricket fixtures that take place on Saturday 14th April.

The evening will commence at 7.30 for 8.00 pm, with the format being an authentic Indian meal followed by a night of cabaret that features female vocalist Kerry Grogan, North-East comedian Mick Gunn, and finishes off with Darren Glover, male vocalist.

It is hoped that the evening will generate substantial and much-needed funds to help run both the senior and junior sections, and the invitation is warmly extended to all club members and their friends.

Did you know ?

The term curry is most likely an anglicised name derived from the usage of "Kari" in the South Indian language Tamil to connotate any secondary dish eaten with rice. In addition, curry leaves, known by the Tamil word 'Karuvapillai' (literally meaning black leaf) are used in various kinds of dishes common in South India made with vegetables or meat and usually eaten with rice.

Bengali dishes called "torkari" -- dry or stewed vegetables in gravy -- is another potential source for the anglicised "curry" since the British occupation of India started in Bengal before Madras. Another theory is the root word for curry is "Karai" or Kadhai" denoting the wok used in Indian kitchens.

A number of studies have claimed that the reaction of pain receptors to the hotter ingredients in curries (even a mild and creamy korma) leads to the body's release of endorphins and, combined with the complex sensory reaction to the variety of spices and flavours, a natural feeling of 'being on a high' is achieved that causes subsequent cravings, often followed by a desire to move on to hotter curries.
